The Route: I-15 North to US-20 East

The standard route follows I-15 north from Salt Lake City through Ogden, past Brigham City and the northern Utah marshlands, crossing into Idaho near Tremonton. Continue north through Pocatello and Idaho Falls, then turn east on US-20 through Rexburg and toward Island Park.

US-20 east of Idaho Falls is the scenic payoff — the highway climbs into rolling high desert before entering the lodgepole forests of the Targhee National Forest, cresting at roughly 6,800 feet and descending into the Island Park caldera. This section is one of the more underrated drives in the Mountain West.

Best Stops Along the Way

Idaho Falls (215 miles / ~3 hours from SLC) Worth a 30–45 minute stop. The Idaho Falls Greenbelt follows the Snake River through downtown — a surprisingly attractive waterfront in a working industrial city. The Idaho Falls Temple (LDS) sits directly on the river and is visually striking even for non-members. Grab lunch here before continuing east.

Rexburg, Idaho (240 miles) College town with good coffee and a handful of restaurants. Shorter stop — 15–20 minutes max.

Last Chance, Idaho (280 miles) This tiny crossroads at the northern end of the Island Park caldera marks the beginning of the Henry's Fork River corridor. The Henry's Fork Ranch area here is a world-class fly fishing destination. Worth slowing down.

Harriman State Park (290 miles) A preserved 16,000-acre wildlife refuge around the upper Henry's Fork. Trumpeter swans, moose, and sandhill cranes inhabit the wetlands. The historic Railroad Ranch buildings still stand. Easy 30-minute stop.

Arriving in Island Park and West Yellowstone

The road descends into Island Park — a 33-mile-long town spread along the highway, the longest main street in the United States. If you're doing an ATV expedition with Nomad Yellowstone, this is where you depart from. It's 20 minutes west of the West Yellowstone entrance.

How Many Days Do You Need?

From Salt Lake City, a realistic minimum is 4 nights: one night driving in, two or three nights based in West Yellowstone, one night potentially in Island Park before driving home.

A 5–6 day loop gives you time to do the park properly (minimum 2 full days), a backcountry ATV expedition, and a stop or two on the return drive. The return can vary — US-20 back to SLC is direct, but routing through Pocatello and Twin Falls or going south through the Tetons and Jackson adds significant scenery.

Practical Notes

• Fill your gas tank in Idaho Falls. Island Park and West Yellowstone have gas, but at a premium.
• Cell service on US-20 between Rexburg and West Yellowstone is spotty. Download offline maps.
• The drive through Targhee National Forest on US-20 is particularly beautiful at dawn or dusk — if you're flexible on departure time, plan accordingly.
• West Yellowstone has no Costco, Target, or major grocery chains. Stock up in Idaho Falls if you're self-catering.
